แม่ฮ่องสอน เป็นจังหวัดชายแดนจังหวัดหนึ่ง ซึ่งมีอาณาเขตติดต่อกับสหภาพพม่า ตั้งอยู่ทางด้านตะวันตกสุดของภาคเหนือ โดยอยู่ห่างจากกรุงเทพฯประมาณ 924 กิโลเมตร มีพื้นที่ประมาณ 12,681.259 ตารางกิโลเมตร ปัจจุบันแบ่งการปกครองออกเป็น 7 อำเภอ คือ อำเภอเมือง แม่สะเรียง ขุนยวม ปาย แม่ลาน้อย สบเมย และปางมะผ้า

แม่ฮ่องสอนได้ชื่อว่า เมืองสามหมอก เนื่องจากเป็นเมืองในหุบเขา ล้อมรอบด้วยภูเขาสลับซับซ้อนทอดขนานไปกับทิวเขาถนนธงชัย และทิวเขาแดนลาว ดังนั้น จึงถูกปกคลุมด้วยหมอกตลอดทั้งปี มีทิวทัศน์สวยงามตามธรรมชาติของเทือกเขาสลับซับซ้อนและป่าไม้นานาพันธุ์จนมีคำกล่าวว่าเปรียบเสมือนกับเป็นสวิตเซอร์แลนด์ของเมืองไทย

ประวัติและความเป็นมาจังหวัดแม่ฮ่องสอน เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2374 พระเจ้ามโหตรประเทศ ผู้ครองนครเชียงใหม่ ให้ เจ้าแก้วเมืองมา เป็นแม่กอง นำไพร่พลช้างต่อและหมอควาญ ออกไปจับช้างป่ามาใช้งาน เจ้าแก้วเมืองมา ยกไพร่พลช้างช้างป่ามาใช้งาน เจ้าแก้วเมืองมา ยกไพร่พลข้ามภูเขา มาทางตะวันตกของเชียงใหม่ ซึ่งมีช้างป่าชุกชุม โดยมอบหน้าที่ให้ พะกาหม่อง เป็นผู้ควบคุมดูแล เมื่อคล้องช้างได้เป็นจำนวนเพียงพอแล้ว จึงพากันเดินทางต่อไปถึงชุมชนบ้านป่าแห่งหนึ่ง มีทำเลดีมีร่องธารน้ำและที่ราบ เหมาะแก่การฝึกช้างป่า จึงหยุดไพร่พลตั้งบ้านเรือนขึ้นที่นี่ และตั้งชื่อหมู่บ้านว่า "แม่ร่องสอน" หมายถึงที่มีร่องน้ำฝึกช้าง ต่อมา ได้เพี้ยนเป็น "แม่ฮ่องสอน"

MAE HONG SON is nestled in a deep valley hemmed in by high mountain ranges, Mae Hong Son has long been isolated from the outside world. Virtually covered with mist throughout the year, the name refers to the fact that is terrain is highly suitable for the training of elephants. Former governors of Chiang Mai used to organise the rounding up of wild elephants which were then trained before being sent to the capital for work. Today, Mae Hong Son is one of the dream destinations for visitors. Daily flights into its small airport bring growing numbers of tourists, attracted by the spectacular scenery, numerous hilltribe communities and soft adventure opportunities.

THAI YAI CULTURE The Thai Yai can be seen along the northern border with Myanmar. They may at one time have been the most numerous of the ethnic Thai tribes that stretch across Southeast Asia. A large group settled in Mae Hong Son. The Thai Yai culture has had a strong influence on the province, as can be seen in its architecture. Although a part of the Lanna region, the indigenous Thai Yai people living in Mae Hong Son are faced with very cold weather during winter and extremely hot weather in the summer, with mist or fog practically throughout the whole year. Not surprisingly they have had to adapt to the environment.
