น่าน มีพื้นที่ 11,472,076 ตารางกิโลเมตร หรือ ประมาณ 7 ล้านไร่เศษ อาณาเขตทิศเหนือและทิศตะวันออกจดสาธารณรัฐประชาธิปไตยประชาชนลาว ทิศใต้จดจังหวัดอุตรดิตถ์ ทิศตะวันตกจดจังหวัดแพร่ พะเยา และเชียงราย

ความที่เป็นเมืองชายแดนแห่งล้านนาตะวันออกอันอุดมไปด้วยวัฒนธรรมที่หลอมรวมจากเทือกเขาสูงถึงพื้นราบทำให้เสน่ห์ของเมืองน่านยั่งยืนมาจนถึงทุกวันนี้ ประกอบกับลักษณะภูมิประเทศที่เป็นท้องทะเลแห่งขุนเขา อีกทั้งสายลมหนาวและสายหมอกที่พัดผ่าน ทุ่งข้าวสีเขียวฉ่ำฝน หรือ เหลืองทองพร้อมจะเก็บเกี่ยว ยังทำให้ผู้มาเยือนเก็บความประทับใจกลับไปด้วย ป้อมปราการธรรมชาติที่บดบังเมืองน่านจากคนต่างถิ่นก็คือเทือกเขาผีปันน้ำและหลวงพระบาง

พื้นที่ป่าของเมืองน่านมีประมาณ 5 ล้านไร่ เมื่อเปรียบเทียบกับพื้นที่ทั้งจังหวัดประมาณ 7 ล้านไร่ ถือว่ามีความอุดมสมบูรณ์มาก ชาวบ้านเชื่อว่ามนุษย์เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของธรรมชาติจึงไม่สามารถฝืนกฎของธรรมชาติได้ พวกเขาจะไม่ตัดไม้ หรือถางป่าทำไร่ในพื้นที่ลุ่มน้ำ พวกเขาดูแลรักษาภูเขาและป่าไม้ด้วยความเคารพ ชาวเขาเผ่าต่างๆ เช่น ขมุ ลัวะ และเมี่ยน เชื่อว่ามีดวงวิญญาณที่รักษาป่า

แม่น้ำที่เป็นเสมือนเส้นเลือดของชาวน่าน คือ แม่น้ำน่าน มีต้นกำเนิดจากดอยขุนน้ำน่าน ตำบลขุนน่าน อำเภอบ่อเกลือ ซึ่งจะไหลขึ้นเหนือไปทางอำเภอทุ่งช้าง ก่อนจะไหลลงใต้ ไปยังอำเภอปัว, ท่าวังผา, เมืองน่าน, เวียงสา หลังจากนั้นจะไหลลงไปยังจังหวัดอื่น คือ อุตรดิตถ์ พิษณุโลก และ พิจิตร จึงไปรวมกับแม่น้ำยมที่อำเภอชุมแสง จังหวัดนครสวรรค์ และแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยาที่ปากน้ำโพ นครสวรรค์ ร้อยละ 40 ของลำน้ำน่านนั้นหล่อเลี้ยงลำน้ำเจ้าพระยา ความเกี่ยวดองกันด้วยศรัทธาในพุทธศาสนา วัฒนธรรมประเพณี ภูมิปัญญาท้องถิ่น และความหวงแหนในทรัพยากรธรรมชาติที่มีร่วมกันทำให้ชาวน่านมีเครือข่ายชุมชนที่เข้มแข็งเรียนรู้ที่จะยู่กับความเปลี่ยนแปลงแต่ยังคงตระหนักถึงความเป็นตัวเองอยู่เสมอ อันจะนำไปสู่การพัฒนาอย่างยั่งยืน

A quiet and tranquil province, Nan nestles in a verdant valley in northern Thailand. About 668 kilometres from Bangkok, it covers an area of 11,472 square kilometres and is made up of the following districts: Mueang, Wiang Sa, Na Noi, Pua, Chiang Klang, Tha Wang Pha, Thung Chang, Mae Charim, Ban Luang, Na Mun, Santi Suk, Bo Kluea, Chaloem Phra Kiat, Song Khwae, and Phu Phiang.
