เมืองตราดสันนิษฐานว่าเพี้ยนมาจากคำว่า “กราด” ที่เป็นชื่อของต้นไม้ชนิดหนึ่งที่ใช้ทำไม้กวาด ต้นไม้ชนิดนี้มีขึ้นอยู่รอบเมืองตราด ซึ่งในสมัยนั้นมีต้นกราดอยู่เป็นจำนวนมาก แต่พอถึงในสมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยา รัชสมัยสมเด็จพระนเรศวรมหาราช เมืองตราดมีชื่อในขณะนั้นว่า “บ้านบางพระ” จังหวัดตราด หรือเมืองทุ่งใหญ่ปรากฏชื่อในทำเนียบหัวเมืองสมัยพระเจ้าปราสาททอง (พ.ศ. 2178) ว่าเป็นหัวเมืองชายทะเล สังกัดฝ่ายการต่างประเทศ ซึ่งเกี่ยวข้องกับด้านการคลัง ตราดเป็นหนึ่งในเมืองท่าชายทะเล ที่มีชัยภูมิเหมาะกับการแวะจอดเรือ เพื่อขนถ่ายซื้อขายแลกเปลี่ยนสินค้า เติมเสบียงอาหาร น้ำจืดบริเวณอ่าวเมืองตราด จึงเป็นแหล่งที่ตั้งชุมชนพ่อค้าชาวจีนที่เดินทางเข้ามาค้าขาย

อุทยานแห่งชาติหมู่เกาะช้าง มีเนื้อที่ทั้งสิ้น 650 ตารางกิโลเมตร ประกอบด้วยเกาะต่างๆ ที่มากถึง 52 เกาะ เรียงรายตั้งแต่เขตอำเภอแหลมงอบ อำเภอเมือง และอำเภอคลองใหญ่ เกาะที่สำคัญที่สุด คือ เกาะช้าง นอกจากนี้ยังมีเกาะอื่นๆ ที่ยังคงสภาพความสวยงามตามธรรมชาติได้แก่ เกาะคลุ้ม เกาะเหลายาใน เกาะง่าม เกาะไม้ซี้ใหญ่ เกาะหวาย เกาะรัง ฯลฯ ที่ทำการอุทยานฯ ตั้งอยู่ทางฝั่งตะวันออกของเกาะช้างใกล้คลองธารมะยมที่ด้านหน้ามีท่าเทียบเรือขนาดใหญ่ของอุทยานฯ นอกจากนี้ยังมีหน่วยพิทักษ์อุทยานฯ อีก 3 จุด ซึ่งล้วนอยู่บนเกาะช้าง คือ บริเวณอ่าวคลองสน บริเวณทางเข้าน้ำตกคลองพลู และบริเวณหมู่บ้านสลักเพชร เกาะช้าง เดิมเป็นเกาะที่ไม่มีชุมชนตั้งถิ่นฐานอยู่อาศัย หากมีความสำคัญในฐานะที่เป็นท่าจอดเรือหลบลมมรสุม เป็นแหล่งเสบียงอาหาร และน้ำจืดโดยเฉพาะบริเวณอ่าวสลักเพชร หรืออ่าวสลัด เป็นที่รู้จักกันดีในหมู่โจรสลัด ชาวจีนไหหลำ และญวน ปัจจุบันบนเกาะช้างมีประชาชนอาศัยอยู่ 8 หมู่บ้าน เกาะช้างเป็นเกาะที่ใหญ่เป็นอันดับสองของประเทศรองจากเกาะภูเก็ต มีเนื้อที่ประมาณ 429 ตารางกิโลเมตร ลักษณะภูมิประเทศส่วนใหญ่เป็นเขาสูงมีผาหินสลับซับซ้อนยอดเขาที่สูงที่สุด ได้แก่ เขาสลักเพชร มีความสูง 744 เมตร สภาพป่าโดยทั่วไปอุดมสมบูรณ์ ส่วนใหญ่เป็นป่าดิบเขา อันเป็นบ่อเกิดของต้นน้ำลำธาร ทำให้มีน้ำตกหลายแห่งบนเกาะ ชายหาด และปะการังที่สวยงามอยู่ทางด้านตะวันตกของเกาะ
