อุทยานแห่งชาติหมู่เกาะลันตา มีเนื้อที่ประมาณ 152 ตารางกิโลเมตร ในอำเภอเกาะลันตา ประกอบด้วยเกาะต่างๆ ที่สำคัญได้แก่ เกาะลันตาใหญ่ เกาะลันตาน้อย เกาะตะเล็งเบ็ง และเกาะใกล้เคียง รวมไปถึงหมู่เกาะห้า หมู่เกาะรอก และเกาะไหง เกาะที่น่าท่องเที่ยวของอุทยานฯ ได้แก่ เกาะลันตาน้อย เป็นเกาะที่เป็นชุมชนของชาวเกาะลันตาในอดีตมาก่อน มีที่ว่าการอำเภอ มีโรงเรียนวิถีชีวิตแบบเก่า ๆ บ้านเรือนโบราณยังมีให้พบเห็น

เกาะลันตาใหญ่ มีรูปร่างยาวเรียวจากเหนือมาใต้ ศูนย์กลางธุรกิจของเกาะอยู่ที่บริเวณท่าเรือศาลาด่านซึ่งมีทั้งบริการท่องเที่ยว ร้านอาหาร ธนาคาร ด้านตะวันตกเรียงรายไปด้วยชายหาดและอ่าวที่สวยงามมากมายได้แก่ หาดคอกวาง หาดโละบารา อ่าวพระแอะ หาดคลองโขง หาดคลองนิน และมีถนนตัดจากท่าเรือตอนเหนือผ่านชายหาดต่าง ๆ ไปจนถึงที่ทำการอุทยานแห่งชาติหมู่เกาะลันตาซึ่งอยู่ตอนใต้สุดของเกาะ พื้นที่ส่วนใหญ่บนเกาะมีสภาพเป็นทิวเขาสลับซับซ้อน ปกคลุมด้วยป่าที่สมบูรณ์ ส่วนด้านตะวันออกมีชุมชนเก่าของเกาะลันตาเนื่องจากเคยเป็นที่ตั้งของที่ว่าการอำเภอมาก่อน ซึ่งย้ายไปอยู่ที่เกาะลันตาน้อย ชาวบ้านส่วนใหญ่บนเกาะลันตานับถือศาสนาอิสลาม และที่บ้านสังกะอู้ยังมีชนพื้นเมืองที่ยังคงยึดถือวัฒนธรรมประเพณี ได้แก่ ประเพณีลอยเรือ ไม่ไกลจากที่ทำการอุทยานฯ มีจุดชมวิว แหลมโตนด ซึ่งเป็นที่ตั้งของประภาคาร จากมุมนี้สามารถมองเห็นโค้งอ่าวกรวดและอ่าวหาดทรายขาวสะอาดมาบรรจบกัน ตอนปลายสุดของแหลมเป็นที่ตั้งของเกาะหม้อ เป็นจุดดำดูปะการังน้ำลึก นอกจากจุดชมวิวแหลมโตนดแล้ว ยังมีจุดชมวิวบนยอดเขาบริเวณตอนกลางเกาะที่มีร้านอาหารสามารถนั่งรับประทานอาหารพร้อมกับชมทิวทัศน์ของทะเลอันดามันที่มีเกาะต่าง ๆ อยู่ท่ามกลางผืนน้ำสีน้ำเงินบนเกาะลันตาใหญ่มีที่พักเอกชนเปิดให้บริการมากมาย ฤดูท่องเที่ยวอยู่ระหว่างเดือนพฤศจิกายน-พฤษภาคม นักท่องเที่ยวที่ต้องการพักค้างแรมในบริเวณที่ทำการอุทยานฯ

การเดินทางไปเกาะลันตาใหญ่ รถยนต์ นักท่องเที่ยวที่นำรถไปเองสามารถนำรถลงเรือได้ที่ท่าเทียบแพขนานยนต์ บ้านหัวหินไปเกาะลันตาน้อยและข้ามแพอีก ครั้งไปยังเกาะลันตาใหญ่ สามารถข้ามแพได้ตั้งแต่เวลา 08.00 น.- 18.30 น. ค่าข้ามแพ จากบ้านหัวหิน – เกาะลันตาน้อย เวลาให้บริการ 07.00 - 22.00 น. เวลากลับ 06.00 - 22.00 น. ระยะเวลาการเดินทาง 15 - 20 นาที รถยนต์ คันละ 50 บาท ผู้โดยสารคนละ 3 บาท มอเตอร์ไซค์ คันละ 10 บาท จากเกาะลันตาน้อย – เกาะลันตาใหญ่ เวลาให้บริการ 06.00 - 20.00 น เวลากลับ 06.00 - 22.00 น. ระยะเวลาการเดินทาง 15 - 20 นาที รถยนต์ คันละ 50 บาท รวมคนขับ ผู้โดยสารคนละ 3 บาท มอเตอร์ไซค์ คันละ 10 บาท สามารถข้ามแพได้ตั้งแต่เวลา 07.00 น. – 20.00 น. การเดินทางไปท่าเรือหัวหิน จากอำเภอเมืองใช้ทางหลวงหมายเลข 4 ไปทางอำเภอคลองท่อม (เส้นทางไปจังหวัดตรัง) ถึง บ้านแยกห้วยน้ำขาว ให้เลี้ยวขวาไปตามทางหลวง 4206 ประมาณ 20 กิโลเมตร จนถึง บ้านหัวหิน รถตู้ปรับอากาศ มีรถออกจากอำเภอเมือง วิ่งระหว่างกระบี่-เกาะลันตาใหญ่ รถออกเวลา08.30 - 16.00 น. ออกทุก 1 ชั่วโมง ค่าโดยสารคนละ 250 บาท ใช้เวลาเดินทาง 2 ชั่วโมง ส่วนขากลับจากเกาะลันตาใหญ่ จะมีรถออกเวลา 08.00 - 16.30 น.
